Left to right: Table Talk, Liquid Loft and Group Six—all part of special exhibitions at the Lódz Design Festival
One of the liveliest of the current crop of design bacchanales comes from a recent recruit to the ranks of the world’s design centers, the Polish city of Lodz. The fourth Lodz Design Festival is to take place in the last two weeks of October. The theme is Amazing Life, exploring design’s potential to improve our quality of life.—ALICE RAWSTHORN (NY Times)
This year’s festival is packed with exhibitions and lectures seeking to explore how the socio-cultural climate of 2010 impacts the design process. The timetable displays an array of topics, from lettering and type design to architecture, photography and industrial design.
The third annual MAKE ME! EXHIBITION 2010, an initiative that invites emerging designers to propose projects and receive feedback from professionals, is also a part of the festivities and boasts 243 entries for 19 finalists. Exciting stuff from a country that has enriched the design landscape for decades and is clearly displaying a renewed energy.
