Many clients don’t suspect how much work produced by designers never makes it into the final presentation. We constantly gauge and reject some of our creations, for various reasons. In turn, as we usually present multiple options and often opt to include solutions that may push the client into unknown creative territory, more work falls by the wayside never to be seen again outside the studio. Until now.

London’s Beach Gallery is hosting an exhibition titled Thanks but, no thanks which features rejected and unwanted work from many well-known designers. Proceeds from sales of the work to benefit the Battersea Dogs Home. An inspiring reason to keep your rejects.

The exhibition runs until 6 May.

Courage to Rage

But what can we do in a world where people are becoming increasingly indifferent? What can we do if abuses of power have become universally accepted, almost uncritically? What can we do if citizens get lost in their lethargy and apparent paralysis instead of getting informed and questioning what is happening around them? Open their eyes! With posters that speak out, that encourage people to start thinking about what they’re seeing.”—from the Mut zur Wut site

What issues matter most to you?

“Mut zur wut” (“courage to rage”) is an international poster contest and free public exhibition giving designers the opportunity to create a poster on a theme of their choice. You have approximately two months to submit your entries, which will be selected for exhibition by an international jury. Submission deadline is 31 May.

The competition will culminate in a free exhibition in the cities of Heidelberg and Mannheim, Germany, from 25 July to 28 August.

Offset 2012

Offset, a 3-day creative festival taking place in Dublin is now in its third year. Between 9 and 11 March 2012, twenty-five design luminaries and countless devotees will converge on the Irish capital and chat about design. Paula Scher, Michael Bierut from Pentagram, Shepard Fairey, Stefan Sagmeister, Von, Droga5, Antoine+Manuel, to name a few, will be speaking at this year’s installment.

The conference’s site contains a useful video archive of 2009 and 2010 talks. Caution: wonderful array of accents.

Ben Gazzara R.I.P

One of John Cassavetes’ greatest friends and actor in several of his films, Ben Gazzara has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 81. Some of his performances—I’m thinking The Killing of a Chinese Bookie or Opening Night—are memorable examples of the best of American cinema-vérité.

This wonderful interview, created for Cinéma Cinémas is shot in New York City at 42nd Street and 9th. Gorgeous light and so much noise!

Tipos Latinos 2012

Tipos latinos is an international network initiative focused on fostering and developing typography in Latin America. it currently has committees and delegates based in 13 countries—Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela—where the biennial exhibition is held simultaneously. Established in 2004—under the name Letras latinas—the Tipos latinos biennial of Latin-American typography also comprises an extensive program of lectures, workshops and guided tours, promoting communication design, typography and cultural exchange among Latin-American professionals.

The call for entries for the fifth biennial is now open. Whilst the typefaces design category can only include designers of latin-american origin, the design categories covering latin-american type uses is open to all nationalities. It’s competition submission time everywhere and so it is for the Annual Vimeo Festival + Awards. Last year, I featured Last Days with Oden, the Grand Prize winning film by Eliot Rausch. He has been invited to judge this year’s contest alongside a plethora of industry heavyweights, such as David Droga, Kasumi and Nick Knight.

The awards boast several categories covering the range of creative expression through moving image. Exciting times.

Re:Design

A short trip to the desert at the beginning of November to meet and chat with leading North American Creative Directors sounds like just the thing to me. 7 and 8 November 2011, Re:Design is holding a gathering at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs on the topic of creative directors. Paula Scher is featured as keynote speaker.

Here’s what Re:Design say about themselves:

RE:DESIGN is a series of events. Some focus on a single aspect of design, like typography. Others are geared towards a particular segment, such as UX Design or Motion Graphics. At each event, there are inclusive, small-scale conversations led by design industry leaders. These are discussions where you are sitting with inspiring thought leaders, trading ideas and creating connections. RE:DESIGN events are about ideas, kindling, and the future of design.

It’s US$695 if you register before 15 October. Tempted.
