The Vancouver Farmers’ Markets make it rather easy to have quality local foods at—relatively—affordable prices, particularly in the summer. There are currently four locations operating in different parts of the city on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays and most run until mid-October. They offer not only fresh produce, but also fish, organic meats, cheeses, artisan breads and pastries as well as a variety of crafts from pottery to jewellery.
The City of Vancouver seems to have recognized the importance of community-supported businesses by making it easier to open new market locations throughout the city. City Council approved bylaw amendments to ensure the markets become a permanent occurrence in the city and will provide city signage to facilitate locating a market near you.
Excellent news for those of us who believe changing the food system can only come from choosing to support local agriculture and creating “healthy food networks that sustain our land, our community, and our homes.”
