The Arts Santa Monica, a contemporary art space in Barcelona, reopened to the public in spring 2009 after being remodelled. Vicenç Altaió, director, has since then created “a multidisciplinary centre for art, science, thought and communication” and staged artistic interventions in the city to raise its profile.

The Fall lineup for the space includes Barceló before Barceló, 1973-82, an exhibition showcasing more than 100 of the Spanish painter’s early works, most never seen in public before. Barceló, born in Majorca in 1957, broke on to the international art scene in 1982, after participating in the Kassel Documenta.

Vagina Dentata Organ—The London Punk Tapes also runs at the centre and features nine audio cassettes of early punk gigs (1976-77). “These tapes, featuring The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Subway Sect, Billy Idol & Generation X, The Slits and Buzzcocks, capture the true sound of punk — raw, countercultural and subversive — as a phenomenon that had a radical impact on popular music and fashion, first in Britain and America, and then worldwide.”

Sounds promising.
