New York’s Museum of the Moving Image has just opened a new addition to its aging building in Astoria, Queens. Imagined by Leeser Architects, the new space is meant to, according to the NY Times, “capture, in a building, the essence of a world in which images proliferate all around us—from our phones, in the back seats of taxis—and in which it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate physical reality from the sleekly manufactured realities of the digital age.”

The Museum has been open for 30 years and welcomes about 80,000 visitors annually. The recent $67 million expansion has doubled the museum’s size and, aside from the street-facing façade which cannot be changed, has considerably altered the space.

The Museum, as is visible on its website, celebrates the 7th art, through talks and workshops with practitioners, screenings and exhibitions. It underwent a rebrand in 1995, and the identity now echoes the futuristic approach embraced by the latest architectural effort.
