I was lucky enough to go see Teorema as part of the Lincoln Center Festival, taking place until 25 July, on- and off-site. Ivo van Hove’s interpretation of the Pasolini play is stark, violent and powerful. I’m not a theater critic but the performances were exceptional and the stage, lighting and sound design—including live quartet—made for an otherworldly experience.
Of course, the setting of the production, a renovated warehouse on Governors Island,, contributed to the feeling of alienation. I first heard of Governors Island’s rebirth in April and have been curious to see it for myself.
A 7-minute ferry ride from Manhattan, it’s a place that time only just remembered and its privileged view on the city and somewhat bedraggled appearance are all part of its charm.
The island’s history dates back to 1637 but its most recent incarnation included housing for coast guard from 1966 to 1995.
Some areas would provide a perfect backdrop for a post-apocalyptic Hollywood blockbuster—I personally love that—but make no mistake: Governors Island has a long-term plan.
As it is, it hosts a vast array of activities, from cycling tours to music concerts, art exhibitions to simple family picnics. The buildings seen in the images above will be demolished so get your fill of their Eastern-block-infused good looks while you still can.
